Flashback // Michael Jordan in the Air Jordan IV "Fire Red"

words // Zack Schlemmer

In 1989 came Michael Jordan's fourth signature shoe with the Air Jordan IV.  Tinker Hatfield's follow up to the Air Jordan III did not disappoint as the Air Jordan IV would become another all-time favorite of many Air Jordan fans.  Michael played in the "Fire Red" colorway for much of 1989 before switching to the Black/Red's for the Playoffs.  Tomorrow brings us the retro release of the shoe in its truest to orginal form without any lasered design or Mars Blackmon face on the heel. (Now if only we could get better quality and "Nike Air" on the heel, but that's another story.)

With their return, we will take a look back at Michael wearing them on the court.  Check out a few images of the GOAT wearing the original Air Jordan IV "Fire Red" below and let us know if you'll be picking up a retro pair this weekend.

Absolutely hilarious that people were loving the cement IV quality and bitching about these. This is why people use terms like 'hypebeast'. The Fire Reds are the best material used in years. By far the closest to OG (softer material). They wrinkle ("crease" according to beasts) because they are not plastic. OGs came this way, too. As I compare my Cements vs Fire Reds the leather is so much softer, even a 12 yr old could tell.
But since the kids on sites like this say they suck then everyone agrees.
However, these kids have never held a pair of OGs in their hands.
Personally, I'm glad. Get rid of the idiots that have no idea what they're talking about.
The same kids said the Countdown Packs were nice.

I admit that I looked at a size 12 and there was some some creasing. But the truth is the leather is much better on these than the cements. This is much closer to actual leather, much softer than the plastic crap used on the cements. Softer material will always bend and crease some, as opposed to the plastic stuff on most retros that is basically like wood. The OGs creased badly, too (because the material was very soft). Except we just called it normal wear and tear for a shoe.

Worst quality I have ever seen on a Jordan to date.... I went to 4 different stores this morning, and every place could not sell anything over a size 11. I guess the smaller sizes were ok, but the larger sizes were so beat up, warped, creased, stitching pulling away from the seams..... absolutely terrible. This is a new low, even by Jordan Brands quality control. Like everyone who arrived at the stores before me, I passed..... LOTS of guys who ordered online this morning who wear larger sizes are going to be very let down and feeling ripped off come next week.

You are right. I went to one store and the guy told me before I even asked for the shoe that the pair he had available were heavily creased. I looked and them and they were. But the crease wasn't the crease you see from wearing. It looked like the leather had been heated and pushed into small waves. It was kind of a ripple effect. Needless to say I passed on those but did end up finding another pair that was on point. The store rep also said his boys in the ATL and Miss had the same problems with their shipments! Crazy.

Exactly. Its as if the shoe was "warped" from being put under heat or something like that. And the stitching and the seams are all wavy and pulling away from each other; even the mesh is warped along with the leather etc... Im happy you at least found a pair! I was not so lucky. between the 4 stores I went to, I looked at 10 pairs of size 12s.... and every single one was in the 3 out of 10 area. Just the fact that 4 stores had all of there size 12s left at 2pm in the afternoon of launch day says it all. I was able to get a pair of the obsidian 7 patchwork that I bet will be amazing quality and look fresh with a pair of dark denim jeans this fall, so the day was not a complete bust! On to the next!

Glad you came out with something brother. I've never been one to complain about quality because I haven't had any major issues with the shoes that I have bought but this recent release has me at a loss. Tragedy! [/quote]
